Groups and Schools

Whether you’re a community group, school class or large party, the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum can offer your group different opportunities for on and offsite engagement.

Do you welcome groups?

As we are a small site (but perfect!), admission to the museum is limited, but larger groups (over 8 persons) are welcome by prior arrangement.

The Museum is a great place to bring a group of friends or family. From planning and booking your day out at the Museum right up to the day of your visit, our helpful staff make organising a group visit simple. We are a popular destination for many book clubs, special interest groups, and a tour can be tailored to your group’s requirements and interests.

Benefits for Group Visits include:

  • Discounted admission for groups of 10+
  • Free admission for the group organiser.
  • Free admission to Blue Badge Guides.
  • A Free preliminary visit for group organiser or coach operator/driver (for 2 people).
  • A tailored tour to suit the interests of the group.
  • Free translation sheets in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Polish or Spanish to accompany your visit.

School trip to Brinsley Headstocks

What’s on offer for schools?

We welcome school visits to this perfectly restored Victorian home, and a visit to the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace is a fascinating way for children to engage with a variety of learning topics, while having a fun day out.

For key stage 1+2 children the tour of the Birthplace Museum is complemented by a choice of activity sessions including:

  • Wash day!  Do the laundry Victorian style in our interactive wash-house.
  • Rag-rug making!  The thrifty craft which is always a favourite with children.
  • The tea party!  Role play, fine china and fairy cakes.
  • History detectives!  A chance to get hands on with our mystery artefacts.

The focus for this age group is social and local history but tours incorporate cross-curricula study including English, Citizenship, Art and Design and more.

For key stage 3+4 children educational visits still give an insight into what life was like in a typical late Victorian working-class home but the experienced guides also talk about D.H. Lawrence’s formative years.  This is particularly useful for introducing children to literature in context.

For older students a tour of the museum can be complemented by taking them into the local countryside and visiting Brinsley Headstocks, or walking the Blue Line Trail.
