Volunteer with us at The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum is the childhood home to the author D.H. Lawrence. The Museum is located in the ex-mining town of Eastwood and surrounded by the lovely landscapes that influenced Lawrence’s life and books.

There are many ways to discover D.H. Lawrence and the landscape that inspired many of his works. Guided and self-guided tours are available at the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum in Eastwood, as well as self-led local walks. So whether you’ve read any D.H. Lawrence books, or simply enjoy a good story and visiting historic houses, come and visit our authentically recreated Victorian miner’s cottage, where the controversial life of D.H. Lawrence began.

At the Birthplace Museum you can:

  • Learn about family life in the mining community, which shaped Lawrence’s childhood and writing.
  • See rooms where the family lived.
  • View personal items and some of Lawrence’s original watercolour paintings
What will I be doing?

Volunteering at the museum can be a varied role, from meeting and greeting visitors, to conserving artefacts, to helping plan our events.

The museum is a small friendly team; we also work closely with the rest of Lleisure, local groups and societies and of course have a regular flow of visitors.

You will gain experience of working in the heritage sector.  This can be a fantastic opportunity if you are looking for work in the sector, but much of the skills you learn will be transferable to other jobs.  Not to mention that volunteering looks great on a C.V.

You may be involved with:

    • Documenting the collection using Modes database.
    • Object enrichment: researching value, date and provenance of objects.
    • Conservation cleaning of objects, during the museum’s annual deep-clean.
    • Helping to deliver guided education tours at the museum and sometimes offsite.
    • Helping to come up with content and activities for education sessions.
    • Being the initial point of contact for our visitors.
    • Serving in the gift shop.
    • Helping with promotion of the museum’s education offering.
    • Taking bookings for tours.
