and show us proof of address to claim your free tour of the museum on any Wednesday, and experience the humble beginnings of a literary legend.

The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum is an authentically recreated miner’s cottage which mirrors how a working class home would have looked in Eastwood in the late 1800s. As part of your free admission, you will get to explore the cottage and see our exhibition rooms filled with interesting objects. There are lots of things to touch and play with such as Victorian toys and smelly Carbolic soap – it’s great fun! Before you enter the Lawrence family’s house you’ll also get to see a short video on D.H. Lawrence and Eastwood, setting the scene for your visit with us.

It doesn’t matter if you have never read any D.H. Lawrence before, we won’t test you! Our experienced guides are able to tailor the tour to your interests. We also offer children’s trails, like our popular ‘Then and Now Trail’ where children can compare modern objects to Victorian artefacts.

So don’t be shy!

Hear tales of the working class family and the local community who inspired and influenced young D.H. Lawrence. Come and step back in time and don’t be afraid to keep saying “I remember my grandmother’s house was like this!”

The museum is open by guided tour only, but don’t worry, our friendly guides won’t bite! We’ll be on hand to answer any of your questions, and to tell you all of our best stories and anecdotes.

Our tours begin at 10.00am / 11.15am / 1.15pm / 2.30pm. Admission lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Find out more about visiting the museum here.
